Waking up to thunder and rain isn't on any anglers list of favorite things to do, but that was the hand Mother Nature dealt to 16 of the best Teams in the State Saturday morning. She put on quite a show for us as we drank our last cups of coffee before takeoff sitting in our trucks watching an amazing light show flashing across the Lake. As fast as it rolled in, it rolled on through and after the lighting show was over we got the boats in and got our game faces on. As we took off to our favorite spots, I headed for Slough Creek with rain stinging my face all the way there. By the time we got the trolling motor down though, the rain was moving on and traces of blue skies started showing themselves. β
Our first spot gave up quite a few fish, but none were the size we were after so we headed toward a brushpile I sank at the mouth of the Slough Creek arm on the Main Lake. In one treetop alone we pulled several really good fish in the 14 inch range. By 7:45 we had 7 quality fish in the boat and began thinking about places to go spend the rest of the Tournament looking for kicker fish at. After spot checking a few places Don and I decided to risk the bone jarring boat ride across whitecaps and headed to the North end of the Lake. Once we got there we headed for the piles of driftwood at the base of the North end cliffs where we pulled some very nice kicker fish out of 2 ft of water, but I also had 2 super nice fish get off, and that ended up costing our Team dearly putting us in 7th overall. β ![]()
Brandon Manis, owner of Top Secret Jigs had a great day with his Tournament partner Marc Shepard bringing in the winning bag as well as the biggest fish of the Tournament with a 2.11 lb Slab. It was a giant female White Crappie that was just full of eggs. She looked like she had eaten a golf ball recently. As soon as we had her weighed in,Brandon immediately released her back into the Lake with the rest of his tournament bag. Not only did the Top Secret Team fish a perfect game taking 1st Place overall and winning the Big Fish contest, they also set a new Club record for the biggest fish caught in a KCC Event. It's pretty hard to beat a day like that, and with his 10.03 and 2.11 big fish, they ended up fishing a perfect game and setting a new record.
The Team of Jim Lewis and Scotty Cavanaugh took 2nd Place with a 7 fish bag that went 9.83 beating out the Team of Todd Morstorf and Ryan Harman landing them in 3rd Place with 9.18. It was a great day with decent weather although it did get a bit windy for a while. Perry did not disappoint us, we saw plenty of good fish. We had 16 Teams that brought 110 fish to the scales that totaled 126.64 lbs, making for an average weight of 1.15 overall. That is a pretty good average, βThe complete Tournament breakdown is under the photo.
